An Ontario Conservative MPP says organized criminals are behind the six-month native land occupation in Caledonia, and that he personally has been threatened because of his involvement in the standoff in his riding. "I've had to take certain measures with respect to my own personal safety and my family and my vehicles," Toby Barrett, the member for Haldimand-Norfolk-Brant told reporters at a news conference held yesterday to mark the six-month anniversary of the occupation by Six Nations protesters. The perception, he said, is that the protest is driven by elements of the community connected to organized crime. "In my view, organized crime makes use of native communities, certain rights and privileges that residents of native communities have." In a statement issued later in the day, Mr. Barrett backed away from his comments.
