A planned 24-hour blockade of two CN rail lines in southern Manitoba has been called off by First Nations leaders in the province.
They had planned the blockade starting Thursday to pressure the federal government to settle outstanding land claims.
CN Rail was in court Wednesday seeking an injunction to stop the action.
But lawyers for the native groups said they were able to reach a deal with CN. Native groups will now hold rallies instead.
As part of the agreement with CN, the company will write to the federal Indian affairs minister, urging him to resolve the land claims.
During a general assembly of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs this month, 50 representatives of First Nations voted unanimously in favour of blocking rail traffic on reserves this summer.
