TORONTO, May 22 /CNW/ - Progressive Conservative Party Leader John Tory today called for cooler heads to prevail in Caledonia and urged the McGuinty government to start showing some leadership to address the situation.
"This situation is at a boiling point and there is a desperate need for leadership and better communications," said Tory. "While David Peterson has done his very best in a difficult situation, we've heard very little from the Premier and it's time for him to step up to the plate. A lack of leadership and proper communication will only continue to make this situation worse."
In recent weeks Tory has visited Caledonia twice to speak with residents about the situation and take their concerns back to the Legislature. He has repeatedly pressed the McGuinty Liberals to communicate the status of negotiations to local residents and their plans for resolving this crisis.
"The people of Caledonia have told me they are not getting information from either the Premier or his minister responsible. Dalton McGuinty needs to urgently fix this so things don't get worse. It's time for him and his government to have an on-the-ground presence in Caledonia and to make sure the people know what is going on," Tory said.
He added: "I hope cooler heads will prevail on both sides. Today's events have been shocking to us all. All sides, including the government, must do everything possible to bring a peaceful resolution to this situation."
