During the course of the investigation police seized approximately 180 cases, each containing 50 cartons of un-stamped tobacco products including Sago brand, Putters brand, and DK's. The seized tobacco products represent approximately $500,000 in evaded taxes.
"This type of criminal activity affects the existence of legitimate businesses that sell cigarettes with all the duties and taxes paid," stated Sgt. Nick Wentoniuk of the RCMP Windsor Customs and Excise Section. "These legitimate businesses are unable to compete with those businesses who sell the cheaper brands."
