Two Tier Hydro One Billing
Sept. 28, 2006 |
| It has taken us some time to confirm the following information about Hydro One Two Tier Billing. The more we get involved in the issues of Natives and how our Government deals with them , the more we find examples of a Two Tier System.
I live in a condo in Richmond Hill and our hydro bill has gone up 7% this year alone. The following information therefore, creates problems on whether all people are equal in our society. We have learned that Hydro One has not issued dis-connect orders for anyone on Six Nations land by Caledonia. In fact we have been told that Hydro One's computer systems have not mailed out their standard collection notices to anyone in Six Nations for the past 8 months. We were told that while residents in Caledonia have been served notices for outstanding hydro bills of $200, there are many homes in Six Nations with thousands of dollars in outstanding hydro bills, yet no collections are being done. Homes in Caledonia are disconnected for these outstanding bills while no disconnections have been done on Six Nations' land even though hydro payments are at least 8 months in arrears, we are told. Furthermore, we have been informed that everyone in Ontario is billed a debt charge called "Previous Ontario Debt Charge" which will appear on your bill for the next 20 years. However, we are told that Natives on reserves are exempt from this charge. We understand the tax exemption status but why do they not have to pay this debt charge? |
| We were also told that during the last large storm about a month ago, the Six Nations Reserve was given priorty to have their hydro restored while other towns went without power for 3-4 days. There may be reasons for this but our contact was unable to say why such priorty was given to Six Nations.
The public should also be aware that Hydro One has video of the people who destroyed the power station and to date have refused to release it to the public via the media. The Natives continually say that no one knows who caused the demage, but the fact is the people were caught on film. This raises questions as to why the OPP has never charged anyone since they have had this evidence all along. Why haven't the media and the public been allowed to know who destroyed the power station? |
