Does today's news point to Two Tier Justice?
|
| We understand and accept that when someone in such a high and important position as Gwen Boniface hands in their resignation, a.k.a. fired, that it is customary to say only positive things about the person. It therefore, neither should surprise us or even bother us as we read the press release on this issue.
However, we cannot allow the various news stories today to pass without pointing out a few details that reveal some interesting points. First, we and others have claimed that somehow Gwen's leadership produced two tier justice in Caledonia. Of course, the OPP denies our charge and claims all decisions were the right ones to do. What we find interesting is the difference between the reaction to the news of Gwen's resignation. We have received numerous emails calling for a get together this weekend to celebrate Gwen's resignation. The Native response is one of remorse - "It's a shame," Janie Jamieson says. Jamieson is a native spokesperson. The second interesting point is that the natives are concerned the next Commissioner might fail to 'understand that aboriginals don't recognize Canadian law.' This could be risking rebellion across the country from those who support the occupation. Are we to understand that the Natives, who have broken almost every criminal law we have on the books, are threatening that the current Native Crime Spree would spread around Canada? The Natives believe they are not subject to any criminal code and according to them, Gwen Boniface understood this and appeared to make decisions that Natives found acceptable to them. According to Janie Jamieson, Gwen acted in a way that allowed them to continue their land claims. The Natives understood that Gwen would not use force and would allow them to continue in their currrent pattern which they call reclamation and we call Native Crime Spree. Janie Jamieson said Boniface understood the dynamics of the dispute and didn't enforce the law blindly by forcibly evicting protesters who remain at the site. Even under Court Order the Natives knew Gwen followed their view of Law & Order, their view that Natives are not subject to Canada's laws. We would like to remind you that Jim Clark, Toronto Deputy Chief of Police (retired), wrote a letter that was printed in the Toronto Star where he talks about what happened when he was in the same position as Gwen Boniface. He stated, "When I met with the native leaders, they asked me if I was going to use force. When I advised them that this was not going to happen" [story] I guess that Gwen Boniface had followed Mr. Clark's example and also told the Natives, at the beginning, that they would not use force. Just one question, did Gwen also meet with the residents and tell them that no force would be used against them? When the OPP Officers were in a line, night after night, facing the residents, were the residents given the same promise she made to the Natives. Ms. Jamieson appears to believe the Natives had such a promise directly from Gwen. Residents are happy, natives are not. Natives view of Law & Order was shared by Gwen Boniface. Natives had a promise of no force while residents enjoyed no such promise. But none of this points to Two Tier Justice. |
| More importantly Gwen Boniface continues to lead the OPP until October. She continues to hold, or at least understand, the Natives' view that they are not subject to Canadian laws. The Natives still have her promise that the OPP will not use force. The Natives still understand that they have, at least, until October to continue their current pattern of protest, their current illegal occupation of private property, their current course of intimidation and control over the area.
One last point to mention. We were told on Monday of this week that Gwen Boniface was going to step down by Friday. We were asked to keep it quiet to allow various players to spin it to their advantage. This is why we posted the photo of 'Gary vs Gwenith' on Tuesday with the planned followup image of a defeated Gwenith which was posted today. This is said only so people can understand that her leaving has been in the workings behind the scene for a while now. When one considers that she recently renewed a 3 year contract as OPP Commissionor, anyone claiming that her resignation had nothing to do with Caledonia must also have some swamp land in Florida for sale. Community Safety Minister Monte Kwinter said the Caledonia occupation, and the personal criticism accompanying it, had nothing to do with her resignation. But then again this comes from the same man who believes the current occuption is only 'symbolic' and that he is unaware of any 'mayhem' still going on in Caledonia. With such mental prowess as this, we all can be assured Mr. Kwinter is correct that Gwen suddenly ending her new 3 year contract had nothing to do with Caledonia. |
| I think the way she handled Caledonia was deplorable. The lack of direction we saw from her was inexcusable. If this was in Hamilton, the chief would be on TV everyday. No that she is leaving the OPP, (officers) will be optimistic" – OPP officer printed in Hamilton Spectator |
