OPP reopens Highway 401 - Travel update 11:30 a.m.

ORILLIA, ON, June 29 /CNW/ - The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has reopened Highway 401, following a decision that public safety is no longer a concern in the corridor between Napanee and Belleville. The overpass was inspected by highway safety crews and traffic is now being allowed to proceed eastbound and westbound.

The OPP continues to monitor a number of road closure situations on Ontario highways in place as a result of demonstrations that are part of the National Day of Action.

In Central Ontario, in Wahta, District of Muskoka, demonstrators continue to block Muskoka Raod 38, eight kilometres west of Muskoka Road 169. Motorists are advised to use Muskoka Road 169 as an alternate route to the Town of Bala.

In Alderville, Northumberland County, demonstrators are blocking the north and south ends of the community on County Road 45. Traffic is being rerouted on County Road 9 from the south and County Road 24 from the north. Traffic is also being diverted on County Road 18 at Curtis Point Road.

Demonstrators continue to block railway tracks near Deseronto.

The OPP recognizes the inconvenience to the public and travellers at the start of the holiday weekend. OPP officers continue to work with those involved to minimize the impact on the travelling public and maintain order and public safety.

Safety for everyone involved is the priority concern. The OPP asks people to be patient despite the significant inconvenience.

The public is advised to visit www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/traveller for road closure information and to monitor their local media for further updates.

Note to Editors: The OPP will provide traffic updates via CNW as situations warrant.
