2004 Native Surveys
|
| You would think that Land Claims issues would be very important to Native People. However, according to a 2004 Survey of Natives both on and off Reserves, you find that Land Claims are not a big priority for the Canadian Government to address since Natives don't seem to consider this a top priority. Like most Canadians, Natives feel Health Care is their greatest concern. Of the approx. 1 milion Natives in Canada only about 375,000 live on reserves. As you can see from the chart below the 625,000 Natives not living on reserves did not find land claims as being important at all.
It is surprising when you consider that issues like Health Care, Education, Treaty Rights and Unemployment have almost the same level of importance regardless of whether Natives live on reserves or not. (within the margin of error)
You would also think that Natives would mis-trust the Canadian Government in favour of native rule. In this regard you would believe that Natives ruling over Natives would result in greater satisfaction amongst Natives. You would also think that the repeated claims over the decades about the failure of the Canadian Government would cause Natives to be greatly unhappy with non-native rule. However, below you will see that Natives are just as happy with Federal Government performance as they are with Native Bands. Can this be possible when our media and Native spokespeople continuously tell us how bad the Canadian Government is towards Native Issues? It is also interesting that the majority of Natives believe their own Native Band Government needs to be reformed.
Most of us understand that the quality of life in the future is based on our Education and Training today. If Natives are going to increase their living standards in the future then the following charts don't look that good. Only 1 in 5 Natives will graduate high school and 10% will not even enter high school. Don't blame that on the white man because only 5% claim they dropped out because of a hostile environment. A full 20% drop out of school because of Pregnancy and family pressure. When 80 Natives out of every 100 do not finish high school you know that in 20-30 years the problems will still be there.
