RCMP follow OPP example in dealing with Native Blockade in Saskatchewan
|
| Small Dead Animals reported yesterday that Natives in Saskatchewan had blockaded a road for the past 3 days. [Link]
What was interesting is that there are no land claims in Saskatchewan - every single one has already been resolved years ago. Read Small Dead Animals report for why this blockade was in place. What we wanted to know is how the RCMP were responding to this illegal blockade. We contacted the RCMP spokesperson for the area and were told that no criminal charges had been laid, no investigations were started or planned. We identified ourselves as owners of this site and she was well aware of what was happening in Caledonia. To be fair we should state that after 3 days there appears to be no violence but of course that is how Caledonia started. Also the RCMP are very busy hunting down the shooter of two RCMP officers. We say this because we would be the first to agree that a non-violent road blockade doesn't merit much attention when you are still hunting such a dangerous person. This said, the spokesperson was asked why the blockade was allowed to continue. We must admit the answer is almost word for word what the OPP have stated for months - each situation must be judged seperately and acted upon accordingly. To be fair again we were told that other groups, i.e. farmers, have also blockaded roads for a few days without charges being laid. Furthermore, we were told that the road being blocked is completely in a Native Reserve. Although the road is used by people to get to other towns, there are other ways around. It will be interesting to see how the RCMP will handle this case as time passes - we'll keep you informed. [Listen to Telephone Call] |
