OPP Commissioner: A Man or a mouse? |
| Jan 8, 2007
When Fantino was announced as the next OPP Commissioner just a few days before our March for Freedom back in October, we were very hopeful that the OPP would start to bring about Equality in their policing methods. We had heard that Fantino was a Law & Order type of person. In his first interview he stated, "One Law for All" which caused us to hope that he believed what he said. However, now we must ask whether the new Commissioner is a Man or a mouse? Tomorrow, Tuesday Jan. 9th, Fantino is going to be in Caledonia. He has been invited by the Rotary Club but the meeting will not be very public. Fantino has set a condition for his appearance and that is the media not be allowed at the meeting. The Rotary Club is taking some interesting steps to ensure that Fantino doesn't face too much opposition during his visit to the Club. First, anyone who will be attenting must have their names submitted and pre-approved. Members of the Rotary Club have told me they are amazed by this and have never heard of this being done by the Rotary Club before. Second, the location of the meeting is not where the Rotary Club normally meets. The location is not being given out to the public or media to ensure that Fantino will not have to address touchy topics. This meeting is being held at the fairgrounds in the Kinsmen Hall at 12:00 noon. As many know this location is gated, fenced in and allows OPP to control who gets in. Fantino is turning out to be more like Gwen Boniface then anyone imagined. Back in early August Gwen Boniface had her secret and well controlled meeting in Caledonia. [Link] A select few residents were picked by the MELT team to meet Boniface in a secret location. The OPP web site states the OPP are 'striving to build a culture of trust, and open and honest dialogue, with the communities it serves'. Mr. Fantino's secret meeting with a pre-approved guest list and the guarantee of no media is hardly 'open' and we know there is be no 'honest dialogue' about the issues. It is clearl Fantino is not willing to deal directly with the public - too scared that people will repeatedly ask him hard questions until he can no longer avoid their questions. Listening to Fantino on Jamie West's show last week was like listening to a 5 year old kid whining that everyone is picking on him and that people won't leave him alone.
