Is Caledonia too Small to Unite?
Dec. 4, 2006 |
| Caledonia will have another opportunity that the people in Ipperwash never had... an opportunity to get their message out there. Over the next two weeks the Mayor, the new Councilor for Caledonia and others in the community will be asked their views and opinions about what is happening.
As people are well aware the media once again forgot about Caledonia as they did Ipperwash. Without media attention the same negotiator from Ipperwash, Jane Stewart, will resolve Caledonia as quickly as she has Ipperwash. The same Inspector Babbitt was in Ipperwash and is now in Caledonia. The law abiding residents of Ipperwash are well aware of just how quickly the politicians at all levels will forget about you once the cameras are turned off. The question now should be will the Mayor go on TV & Radio and as per her past poor performance declare the end of the world as we know it because the town of Caledonia will go up in flames. Or will the Mayor use this gift over the next two weeks to present a message of support for the people who voted her in. Will Craig Grice do the same as Ashbaugh and say nothing to any media or will he too take this gift and go on TV & Radio and represent the people of Caledonia. |
| The Title of this story is "Is Caledonia too Small to Unite?" I raised questions back in August about whether Canadians would unite behind their fellow Canadians or would they only care if it was happening to them personally. This is equally true of people within Caledonia.
Since I have been involved I have never come out against anything any group was doing in Caledonia. I am against secret meetings. I am against secret deals but I am not against any group coming up with an idea and running with it. The number one surprise and the number one discouragement in all that I have done is that so many people in Caledonia will not help their own neighbours. In my first trip to Caledonia I asked one person why they didn't support the Class Action law suit and heard the person tell me it was because one of the businesses involved doesn't provide good service to the town. Another person told me that someone involved in the Class Action said something to their Aunt a few years ago and therefore they wouldn't support the Class Action. In every trip I make to Caledonia I hear someone tell me that this person or that person said or did something wrong to a friend of theirs. I hear things like 'this small group sits by themselves at Tim Hortons and they never say hello to me so I will not support what they do. My family has been in this Town for 30 years and that other family has been here for 100 years and they never accept us as part of the community'. I hear this group or that group gossiping about why this person or that person has done something that bugs them. Of course, I now hear that some can't support this because Gary supported the wrong person in the election. |

I am the youngest of Six Boys
|
| There is one thing you learn growing up with five older boys... they are jerks... of course they would say I was the jerk. I did not pick my brothers and like everything else in life things happen. Yes, people are jerks. Yes, people say and do things that are not nice. But a brother is a brother is a brother - I am there for them as they are there for me.
Hey people of Caledonia, you don't pick your neighbour - sorry to break it to you but it is true. All of us do things that bug others - that is life. Get over it and move on. In the whole scope of life does it really matter whether some guy said something to your aunt 4 years ago or whether the service at a particular business is as good as you think it should be? Let's see... what to talk about... Two Tier Justice or my hair dresser's brother's boss heard that... - who cares. |

Why am I saying all this?
|
| Because there are those who will do anything to ensure that the town doesn't unite around anything. Because there are far too many small groups who appear to be unwilling to help each other. Because the media, Government and pro-Native side will say and do anything to present a message that says Caledonia is not united.
If it makes people happy allow me to be the first to apologize. I am so sorry I am white. I am so sorry my family was not born here 300 years ago. I am so sorry that my grammar bugs you. I am so sorry that the media interviewed me and not you. I am so sorry that I want to help. I am so sorry that unlike most Canadians I don't sit on my ass and don't care about anyone other than myself. Please forgive me. |
| Ipperdonia is the name of your town unless you forget about the petty differences, forget about how long your families have lived in town, forget about whether you like this person or that person and forget about all the gossip.
It is your Town - will you Unite or will you be divided? I can only provide you the opportunity to get your message out. Will that message be we are afraid and divided or will the message be we are united and demand results from our leaders. It will be interesting to hear what the Mayor, Mr. Grice and residents say. |
